Monday, November 12, 2012 -- More than 1,000 people turned out for Veterans Appreciation Day Festival aboard the U.S.S. Iowa battleship in San Pedro in San Pedro. JVS' Veterans First staff John Tyler and Pete Forster were present, along with Marguerite Womack, our Director of Workforce Development, manning the booth to tell people all about the services we offer for veterans who are looking for work. You can learn all about Veterans First on our website.
KABC reported a grand turnout that also coincided with 16th Annual Veterans Day Parade in Long Beach. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says the event will become an annual affair.
With the actual holiday of Veteran's Day falling on Sunday, numerous parades and observances took place throughout the city, from the annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the Sal Guarriello Veterans Memorial in West Hollywood to the San Fernando Valley veterans Day Parade in Pacoima to the groundbreaking of a $12 million, 40-unit El Monte Veterans Apartments.
This is, not surprisingly, a busy time for Jessica, John, Pete and the Vets First team who were at a recent Hire our Heroes job fair last week and who will turn out for the United Way of Greater Los Angeles HomeWalk 2012, a 5K walk/run to end homelessness next weekend.
Today, however, the day on which the Veteran's Day holiday is actually observed, The Veterans First team members all have the day off. Deservedly.
