Keynote Speaker (2001)

S. DAVID FREEMAN

S. David Freeman is Chief Energy Advisor to California Gov. Gray Davis. In this role, Mr. Freeman leads the state's energy-conservation efforts. Working with businesses, local governments and citizens, Mr. Freeman aims to lower energy consumption by 20 percent. Mr. Freeman, who recently led the state's efforts to negotiate long-term energy contracts for the Department of Water & Power as an unpaid advisor, was formerly General Manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP).

Prior to his appointment to LADWP in 1997, he served as Gov. Pete Wilson's appointee to head the California Independent System Operator (ISO/PX) and the California Power Exchange Trusts. As Trustee, Mr. Freeman managed the startup of the ISO and PX. Mr. Freeman served as president and CEO of the New York Power Authority from 1994 to 1996 and in top positions at Tennessee Valley Authority, Lower Colorado River Authority, Sacramento Municipal Utility District. In these positions, he successfully introduced energy conservation and efficiency projects, established a reputation for reaching out to community groups, and developed solid relations and respectable with labor.

An engineer and lawyer by training, Mr. Freeman also served as an energy advisor to President Jimmy Carter; an energy consultant to the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee; head of the energy policy staff in the White House Office of Science & Technology; and as executive assistant to the chairman of the Federal Power Commission.

In 1999, Mr. Freeman received the American Public Power Association's Alex Radin Distinguished Service Award. In 2000, he received the Global Green's Local Environmental Leadership Award for his untiring commitment to conservation and the environment.

The author of a book "Energy: The New Era," Freeman holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Georgia Tech and a law degree from the University of Tennessee Law School. He is a veteran of World War II.

Employees of the Year (2001)

YURIY MAKSIMOV

As a refugee from St. Petersburg, Russia, Yuriy marked his first year in the United States in September 2001. Today, he is a database developer at Costa Mesa-based software company UltraLink, named among the United States' "100 Companies to Watch" by ComputerWorld magazine. Previously, Yuriy worked as a senior database application developer and designer in private companies, research institutes, and the Naval Academy in St. Petersburg. Normally, refugees like Yuriy are entitled to two years of government welfare support. But due to Yuriy's eagerness to gain self-sufficiency and willingness to learn about the American workplace, he embarked early on his job search and accepted his current job in November 2000, exactly two months after his arrival in the United States.

KEN MORAN

Friendly, vibrant and fun-loving, Ken Moran enjoyed his work as an adolescent therapist. But after suffering a stroke, Ken needed intensive rehabilitation to function independently, let alone return to work. After a year, Ken went back to work but felt newly self-conscious about his new disabilities. Later, ready for a new career challenge, Ken turned to JVS. His JVS counselors helped him regain his former professional confidence - particularly in telephone interviews, where Ken felt his new speech impediment was most noticeable. Through career counseling at JVS, Ken determined that the best job for him would be counseling younger children, and he and his JVS counselor together set out to find the right opportunity. Today, Ken is happily helping children at Families in Touch in South Central Los Angeles.

SIMONE ROSE

Growing up in Frankfurt, Germany, Simone Rose dreamed of living in the United States. While pursuing her degree in accounting at the University of Paderborn in Germany, she spent a year at the University of North Carolina. After graduation, she accepted a job with KPMG in Frankfurt, but still yearned to live in the U.S. In 2000, Simone added her name to the "immigration lottery" that enables non-U.S. citizens to "win" the right to work in the United States, and won. She packed her bags, moved to Southern California, and began a job search. Simone visited JVS, where counselors helped her refine her resume and introduced her to Nanas, Stern, Biers, Neinstein, & Co., LLP, the Beverly Hills accounting firm where she works today.
