August 19, 2013 - JVS is bringing its comprehensive career development and job training services to an area of Los Angeles that has faced persistently high unemployment. In partnership with the Employment Development Department (EDD), JVS has taken over the operation of the Northeast San Fernando Valley WorkSource Center (NSFVWC) in Pacoima. EDD shares the facility located at 11623 Glenoaks Blvd. which was formerly operated by Los Angeles Mission College.
Anthony Rodriguez, JVS Career Development Coordinator, will manage the center, working with local job seekers, including long term unemployed and recently returned veterans. JVS will offer elements of its award-winning Veterans First program at the site. Veterans Firsthelps returning U.S. servicemen and women transition from military to civilian life by providing individual coaching, combined with extensive resources and referrals to meet the specific needs of each person. Thanks to generous support from several private foundations, JVS will also be expanding its highly successful Battle Buddies veterans support group.
“JVS offers a level of professionalism that people aren’t accustomed to, and I think that’s really going to make a difference,” says Rodriguez.
EDD staff welcomed the JVS team on its first day of operation. The two agencies have enjoyed a lengthy and successful partnership, with EDD sharing the same building – albeit on a different floor – as the JVS WorkSource Center in Marina del Rey.
“I know there’s going to be a learning curve as we work together to understand what each entity does and how we can complement each other,” said Eddie Purtuas, alternate manager of EDD’s San Fernando Valley Cluster of Workforce Service. “We want to make sure the customer is getting the biggest bang out of all this. That’s the bottom line.”
“We’re all aimed at the same result, whether we’re sending a person to a workshop that’s primarily facilitated by JVS or sending him to one that is facilitated by EDD,” Purtuas continued. “That’s the beauty of the integration. A person just comes and gets what he needs.”
Among the programs offered will be those geared toward youth ages 16 to 21. The JVS Youth Services staff prepare at risk and probation youth for productive lives by training them to be job ready and assisting with their educational and career paths. Under the direction of Nancy Cabrel and program staff members Ileana Oliva, Margarita Partida and Cristina Cruz, JVS will operate a range of special programs targeted to youth living in poverty or facing specific challenges. All of the JVS staff members based at the center will be fluent in Spanish.
“We’re especially pleased to be serving people in the Northeast San Fernando Valley,” says Marguerite Womack, JVS Director of Workforce Development. “We will be bringing our core programs to the Center, including workshops on resume writing and interview skills, dress for success, and workplace expectations as well as potential new workshops on social media. We really hope to make the process seamless for these clients.”
