JVS Scholarship Program "Hero" Chic Wolk Featured in Los Angeles Daily News

12-18-2012 – Chic Wolk, a generous donor to the JVS Scholarship program since 2006, is the subject of a feature profile in the Dec. 18 edition of the Los Angeles Daily News.

Wolk, a one-time parking lot magnate, is one of 12 “Everyday Heroes” honored by the Daily News. Wolk is also the founder of the Survivor Mitzvah Project whicih sends money and aid to elderly and rural Jews in east European countries.

“I visualize somebody who’s completed three years of college, bright young person and their mother or father loses their job and there’s no money for tuition anymore,” Wolk says in the article written by Bob Strauss. “Their potential is going to be lost to themselves and if they could continue their education they could probably contribute more to society.

The JVS Scholarship Committee awarded over $457,000 in scholarships to 147 local Jewish students for the 2012-13 academic year. Awards, which are granted based on financial need, community involvement and academic merit, ranged from $2,000 to $5,000. Since the inception of the JVS Scholarship Program in 1972, JVS has awarded 3,718 scholarships totaling more than $5.5 million.
