Beit T’Shuvah

Maintaining the delicate balance of recovery from substance abuse while juggling the pressures of re-entering the workforce is a challenge for many at the Beit T’Shuvah. Yet each year men and women, ranging in age from 16 to 65, maintain their hard won sobriety while returning to school, jobs or finding new career directions, along with a newfound perspective on life.   JVS is proud to have established an on-site career center at Beit T’Shuvah and provide on-site career counseling to facilitate residents’ re-entry into the world of work.  The program is funded by JVS, Beit T’Shuvah and the generosity of several private donors.

At 35-years of age Paul A. turned to Beit T’Shuvah hoping to overcome 18 years of addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs. When he met with the JVS Career Counselor to explore options for returning to work, he had many fears about facing life without the buffer of drugs and alcohol. Paul and his counselor created a new resume based on interest and skills that emerged during Paul’s career counseling process. Duringthat process Paul also realized that despite an inconsistent work history, he had attributes that would be beneficial to an employer. The JVS Counselor developed some job leads, which led to Paul being hired by a real estate development company.  Since being hired, the company has provided Paul with a notary license and they are now preparing him to manage a shopping center. Paul proved to himself that he could maintain a clean and sober lifestyle and establish a successful career with his employer.

Project Hope/Fundacion Josef y Gloria Gorelik

JVS offers critical assistance and hope to individuals in Santa Monica at risk of becoming homeless in planning and executing a realistic job search process through vocational assessments, counseling, job search skills training, and employment and training referrals.

Overcoming Poverty Through Employment

This program provides on-site search help, career counseling and referrals for low-income clients of SOVA Food Pantry.  Services are available at all three SOVA locations, with the intent of helping to move clients from unemployment to employment or underemployment to self-sufficiency.

Partners in Hope

Hope for the future is what JVS is providing residents of the Jewish Family Services Family Violence Project’s Hope Cottage.  Aptly named Partners in Hope, the program is funded by The Jewish Federation Valley Alliance and seeks to restore the shelter’s domestic violence victims’ self-esteem and confidence while providing career and employment services and support.

Life and Work Planning Program

Many in Los Angeles must contend with unemployment and underemployment, and fall below the government’s poverty threshold.  JVS assists parents whose children participate in programs at HOLA (Heart of Los Angeles), the parents, guardians and foster parents of at-risk youth near the JVS West Hollywood WorkSource Center, as well as the adult members of families residing at Jewish Family Service’s Gramercy Place Homeless Shelter.  Workshops are conducted in Spanish and English, and participants learn about the world of work, employment options and how to find jobs that fit with their skills.  The program is generously funded by a grant from the Whitecap Foundation.

Guadalupe M. had been barely making ends meet by babysitting neighbor’s and friend’s children.  Now, she is enrolled to earn her GED (High School Equivalency certificate) which will allow her to secure steadier employment and earning.

GAIN/GROW

In a historic partnership, for-profit MAXIMUS and JVS/CPC are working together to help participants of Los Angeles County’s GAIN program.  Often dependent on welfare, clients have economic, educational, social, cultural, and linguistic barriers to finding and keeping a job.  Both agencies provide full-service case management, under the supervision of the County.  The bottom line and real measure of success for participants however, is freedom.  Freedom from welfare.  Freedom to help their families.  Freedom to build not just a career, but their self-confidence as well.  More than 9,000 people in the greater Los Angeles area will benefit, with offices in Chatsworth, Palmdale, and Santa Clarita.
Rachel S. had been on welfare since 1994.  A victim of domestic violence, she faced numerous barriers to finding a job, including mental health issues and a lack of education.  With JVS’ expert assessment and career counseling through the GAIN program, she was directed to the community resources she needed, attended vocational training and was offered a full time position with a local printing company.  Today, she has hope, a job and a plan for the future.
