Refugees & Immigrants

JVS brings the American Dream to life for over a thousand refugees and immigrants each year who arrive from Russia, Iran and Armenia.  Although they often leave behind professional careers, friends and family members, these individuals gain a second chance in the U.S. through JVS’ acculturation and employment programs. JVS’ Refugee and Immigrant Services are funded through the County of Los Angeles, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society and the Jewish Federation Council of Los Angeles.

Programs
For more information on these programs, contact JVS at refugees&immigrants@jvsla.org or call (323) 761-8888 or (818) 464-3222.

JVS’ Resettlement Program

Many newly arrived Americans are overwhelmed with learning English, navigating the transportation system, and adapting to the culture.   JVS assists these clients in acquiring U.S. job skills, with ESL classes and job placement.

JVS’ Refugee Employment Program/ Refugee and Immigrant Training and Employment

- 60% of all enrolled clients of JVS’ Refugee Employment (REP) programs are placed in jobs and taken off welfare rolls annually.

For refugees who have been living in the U.S. for less than five years and are still dependent on welfare, becoming gainfully employed is an overwhelming challenge. JVS’ REP program addresses these challenges through short-term job training, as well as intensive case management, job placement and follow-up support.
24-year-old Farnaz Sabouhi did not want to rely on government help after arriving in the US from Iran. Through JVS, she learned how to fill out job applications, prepare an effective resume and improve her English language skills. A REP job developer at JVS organized a special group interview at Macy’s Department Store. Although over 20 individuals attended the interview, Farnaz was one of only a few that was selected for a full-time position.
Over the next year, she impressed her co-workers, customers and manages alike, and was selected as one of JVS’ Employees of the Year. After being honored at the 2004 Strictly Business Luncheon, corporate sponsor Wells Fargo was so impressed by her story and success that they hired her to work at one of their branches weeks later.

Certified Nurse Assistant Training and Employment Program (CNA)

- More than 60 welfare recipients transitioned into employment through the CNA program, with over 90% receiving State certification.

JVS’ CNA program began as an initiative to train long-term welfare recipients for careers in the nursing industry.  A highly replicable model, this unique program helps participants learn viable, in-demand new skills.  In partnership with Los Angeles Valley College, JVS is currently training hard-to-serve clients, while supporting these clients through intensive case management, Vocational ESL classes, job retention, guidance and follow-up services to make sure that everyone who enters the program is successful.   Prompted by the tremendous nursing shortage and high degree of need in the community, JVS has created an affiliate, Community Care at Home and new graduates, after certification, will be employed by the agency.
