Alfred E. Mann

Chairman & CEO of Mannkind Corp. and Chairman & Co-Chief Executive Officer of Advanced Bionics Corporation

Alfred E. MannAlfred E. Mann has turned a passion for making science serve people into a story of business success that is extraordinary. Companies he has founded and still leads include MannKind Corporation and Advanced Bionics Corporation. His work has led to astounding breakthroughs in cochlear implants essential to the treatment of severe hearing loss, as well as in the development of novel therapeutics and drug delivery technologies. He is also Chairman Emeritus of MiniMed, Inc. a manufacturer and distributor of microinfusion systems and continuous glucose monitoring systems vital to the effective treatment of diabetes. In the late 80’s and early ‘90’s Mr. Mann was also Chairman and CEO of Siemens-Pacesetter, Inc. one of the nation’s foremost manufacturers of cardiac pacemakers. Companies he founded and headed over the past four decades have been purchased by Textron, Inc., Siemens Corporation and Medtronic, Inc. He has also established numerous other companies to advance medical research and innovations.

Mr. Mann is currently Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Alfred Mann Foundation and of the Alfred Mann Institute at the University of Southern California, medical research foundations founded and endowed by Mr. Mann. He is a Trustee for The University of Southern California and a member of the Board of Overseers of the Keck USC School of Medicine. Mr. Mann has also served as the Chairman of the Southern California Biomedical Council, a nonprofit association dedicated to the fostering of the biomedical industry in the Los Angeles Metropolitan area.

In the past three years alone, Mr. Mann has received The Golden Platter Honor from the American Academy of Achievement, The Heart of a Child Award from the Cardiac Arrhythmia Research and Education Foundation, The Elie Wiesel Humanism in Healing Award, Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees from both The University of Southern California and Johns Hopkins University as well as the Business Person of the Year Award by the Los Angeles Business Journal.

JVS was pleased to join in recognizing the accomplishments of this distinguished scientist, business leader and humanitarian.

Staples’ commitment to the community is evident in their many partnerships with charitable organizations, including JVS. Through Staples Foundation for Learning, Staples is dedicated to funding programs that support or provide job skills and/or education for all people, with a special emphasis on disadvantaged youth.

Staples’ generosity assisted JVS to equip an extensive computer lab for JVS’ West Hollywood WorkSource Center and encouraged additional corporate gifts from LA area companies. Part of a statewide network of neighborhood-based assistance centers, the WorkSource Center provides free job programs and services to students and the unemployed. Staples also donated another 150 new scanners and printers that JVS distributed to schools, youth homes and shelters, providing valuable on-site training to LA area high school students, foster and at-risk youth.
